Madrid, 2021. Effective June 1, the intellectual property rights of 130,000 artists and visual creators from more than forty countries, including painters, architects, sculptors, illustrators, graphic designers, and photographers, will be managed and represented by the prestigious VEGAP (Visual Entidad de Gestión de Artistas Plásticos) organization, joining other key segments of the industry: music, film, video games and book publishing, which have already been active participants in the Coalition for some time now.
As stated by Antón Patiño, president of VEGAP, following the announcement of its incorporation, «visual artists join the other creators and creative industries of The Coalition, with the aim of strengthening the unity of the industry at this crucial time for the development of substantial national and European Union regulations, facing the challenges of the digital transformation, the management of the impact of the pandemic on the markets and the promotion of funds for recovery. Another objective is to strengthen new synergies and reinforce the protection of intellectual property and the legal supply of digital content, as fundamental axes, to consolidate a future that is respectful of cultural diversity, cultural heritage and intellectual creation, as strategic sectors of social wealth». Antón Patiño emphasized: «we are here to contribute.»
The main associations and representatives of the cultural industries in our country are part of La Coalición de Creadores e Industrias de Contenidos since its foundation in 2008, and as Carlota Navarrete, general director of La Coalición, points out, «the incorporation of VEGAP is excellent news for all our members, not only because it implies joining the forces of such a valuable group and such a powerful sector of the creative industry, but also because of the message of unity, strength and common positioning of the entire sector that we are sending out. Now we are more, we represent more diverse interests, but we share a common goal, the defense of intellectual property, and this makes us better and stronger to face the challenges of the present and the future».
VEGAP was created in 1990 by a group of Spanish artists to collectively manage the intellectual property of their visual creations. Its field of action includes visual arts, new forms of artistic expression – video art, performance, graffiti, net.art, crypto-art, photography, graphic design, or illustration, and is in contact with the successors of creators such as Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Chillida, Tápies, Martín Chirrino or César Manrique, among others.
In 2020, VEGAP celebrated its 30th anniversary, renewing its commitment to promote and strengthen the defense of intellectual property in our country. In addition, it has a significant international presence and activity, as it is a member since its creation of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) as well as of the International Council of Authors of Graphic Arts, Fine Arts and Photographers (CIAG), as well as of the European Visual Artists (EVA) and Online Art (OLA).
La Coalición’s main mission is to work in the promotion and development of as many public or private initiatives as necessary to effectively encourage the protection and promotion of intellectual property rights, especially on the Internet. Since its inception in April 2008, La Coalición has sought to be a good institutional reference in the fight against intellectual property infringements on the Internet and to make clear that the cultural sector is essential for Spanish employment, economy, and society, since it provides more than 756 thousand jobs, accounting for 2.6% of the total in Spain, and representing 3.5% of Spain’s GDP.
